Drink History

Located in the heart of Townsend, Canyon Ferry Brewing is part of a brewing tradition that stretches back to the town’s earliest days.

Around 1882, Thomas Dixon (pictured center), one of Townsend’s first businessmen, established a full-scale brewery and began producing his celebrated Primrose beer. Brewed with pure mountain water and Gallatin malt, Primrose earned a reputation for its exceptional quality and became known throughout the Montana Territory.

Dixon also built a saloon featuring one of the finest bars in the Northwest, complete with rich cherry wood, elaborate mirrors, and an impressive back bar. In the horse-and-buggy days, Dixon’s Brewery became a favorite gathering place, where locals would spend a hot Sunday afternoon relaxing over a cold beer.

Today, Canyon Ferry Brewing stands on the original site of Dixon’s saloon. Kelli and Tadd are proud to carry that history forward, crafting their own selection of beers while honoring the Montana tradition of good beer, good company, and a place worth gathering.

More than 140 years later, Townsend is still raising a glass in the same spot.

Keeping Townsend’s brewing history alive—one pint at a time.
